For those of you reading this who are fortunate enough to live in the beautiful city of Los Angeles, you are no stranger (we hope) to the Saturday’s Off the 405 summer concert series at the Getty Museum. This past Saturday offered the sounds and soul of Seattle’s best-kept secret, Pickwick. To say they brought down the house (museum) while hundreds of art (wine) connoisseurs danced and enjoyed would certainly be an understatement. Led by singing prodigy Galen Disston, the soulfully charged band of six smoothly executed a full blown performance of their debut EP, Can’t Talk Medicine. Disston belted out the velvety, seductive tunes “Hacienda Hotel” and “Lady Luck” to only then crank up the garage vibe full blast with “Window Window” and “The Shadow”. Their incredibly inclusive sound generates a contemporary indie sensibility without forgetting the vintage elements of their Motown sound. Pickwick has invigorated indie rock with soul the same way the Black Keys reinvented Garage Rock and Blues. This show jumpstarted their late summer tour that will end in early October, and I’m confident this stretch will give them the exposure & push to get them closer to the notoriety they deserve. If you were lucky to catch them, hats off to you. And if not, check out their listing of upcoming shows so you can get groovin’ too. Drink that up!
